Small size Cawley's double-acting Glandless Steam Engine, working on Air-pump, mounted on board

This shows a form of self-contained reciprocating engine introduced by Mr. G. Cawley in 1895. The piston is of exceptional length, being two single-acting pistons cast together; the connecting member contains a transverse slot in which works a block encircling the crankpin. The crank is of the bent type and, with the block, is got into position through the side of the cylinder by an opening that is closed by a cover which contains one of the crankshaft bearings. Steam is distributed by a rotating slide-valve attached to the inner end of the crank- shaft. This example was designed to work suspended, and has its steam or compressed air supplied through a flexible pipe.
