Holden and Brooke's patent Exhaust Steam Injector 1884 (in section)

This is a sectioned example of an injector patented by Messrs. Holden and Brooke in 1884, and is specially constructed and proportioned for working with the exhaust steam from an engine, instead of requiring live steam from the boiler. The principle is the same as that of the earlier 'Giffard' injector, but the details are modified to suit the lower pressure of steam employed. The apparatus is, however, even more remarkable than the original form, since by it the exhaust steam forces the feed into the boiler against the higher full steam pressure.
