Locomotive wheel casting pattern, Great Northern Railway, for 4-2-2 locomotive No 1, Stirling Single.

The Stirling Single class of steam locomotive was made distinctive by its large driving wheels. They were designed to be fitted with two driving wheels each measuring over 8ft. It was thought that this design would help to improve the reliability of the engine while travelling at high speeds, as well as providing increased grip. The class entered service in 1870 and were withdrawn in 1907.
