Hand bearing compass by Berge, first half 19th century

Magnetic compasses are portable and easy to use for rapid survey where high accuracy is not required. This example, made by Matthew Berge, successor and son-in-law to the renowned London Maker, Jesse Ramsden, was suitable for route marching and simple navigation.
