Meters like these were designed to measure the direction and velocity of currents in seas and rivers – a challenging observation to make accurately, especially from a moving ship. This instrument, by American instrument maker W & L E Gurley, was first designed in the early 1900s and underwent many modifications until the 1930s.
This particular example was loaned from the Science Museum for use by the River Tees Survey in 1929.
