Bronze End-Standard yard measure, no.69, with wooden case, agate plugs and gold centre plug

Bronze End-Standard yard, no.69, with wooden case, agate plugs and gold centre plug. (Royal Commission, 1854)

Bronze end-bar standard yard measure made by Troughton & Simms, London for the 1854 British commission on Weights and Measures. Following the revision of British measures through the Imperial Measures Act in 1824, there were several attempts to improve the physical standards that underlined the new legislation. This secondary standard is designed for easier comparison with the primary yard measure that is defined by lines ruled on gold studs recessed into the bar.
