Upper magnet coil drum, tl, above vacuum pump, lower magnet coil drum partly visible below. Manipulating gear in horizontal brass tube. Accelerated particles - protons or neutrons - are collimated by holes in concrete blocks (red). Holes in concrete shielding blocks (grey) allow particles to pass through. Lead shielding blocks, foreground.
