Red & White Kings Cigarettes, Bombay, India, 1975-1980
Red & White Kings cigarettes, cellophane wrapped, Godfrey Phillips India Ltd. One of a selection of drugs and related material from India, 1975-1980.
The risks associated with tobacco smoking are well publicised. All these Indian cigarette packets carry the warning in English “Cigarette smoking is injurious to health”. This written warning on cigarette packets was required by Indian law after the passing of the Cigarettes Act in 1975. However, this warning was useless to those who could not read and it did not apply to other tobacco products.
The United States introduced written warnings in 1964 and the United Kingdom in 1971. From October 2008, pictures of health problems were placed on cigarette packets in the United Kingdom. Shown here with other cigarettes by other Indian manufacturers.
