Cupping set, incomplete, comprises one scarificator, three cupping glasses, one bottle, one canister, one kettle(?), used by Edward Jenner, late 18th century, in mahogany case.

This is ordinary equipment all surgeons would have owned. The English doctor Edward Jenner (1749-1823) introduced vaccination in 1796. His scientific investigations, published in 1798, showed that fluid taken from a human with cowpox could be used more safely for vaccinations than could variolation - inoculating non-infected people with fluid from pustules of smallpox sufferers.
