Tinder-bag in form of a pocket (length 3 ins) of bead-work, lined with blue silk; flap held closed by a small brass button; exterior bears on one side wine-bottle, glass, long pipe, and spills in holder, and, on the other side, a writing-lamp, pen in ink-stand, etc., all on a writing desk, both designs in colour on a white ground; contents missing; steel bears on each side a floral design, lightly surface-etched; 19th century. France. [One of fifteen examples (nos 910-924, all European and most dating to the first half of the nineteenth century. All small - approx. 3 ins square - to be carried in a pocket. Most are leather, with made of tapestry, wool-work or bead-work. Tinder and flint would be carried inside, whilst in most the steel is fixed to the bottom of the bag].
