Tinder-bag in form of a pocket (length 3 3/8 ins) of dark brown leather; exterior bears lozenge pattern, lightly embossed; contains flint (a gun-flint); steel has hinged on to its sides pipe-prick, pipe-stopper, and pipe-scraper; 19th century. ? Germany. [One of fifteen examples (nos 910-924, all European and most dating to the first half of the nineteenth century. All small - approx. 3 ins square - to be carried in a pocket. Most are leather, with made of tapestry, wool-work or bead-work. Tinder and flint would be carried inside, whilst in most the steel is fixed to the bottom of the bag].

Tinder-bag (depth 5 ins) of thick white cotton string, very thickly and closely woven; roughly circular, with a small flap at top, held closed by a thin cotton string, between two thick strong loops or ears for suspension from girdle; contains flint (a large rough lump of white quartz), a steel (of recurved type, similar to others from India, already described: see nos. 501-504); and tinder (white undyed cotton threads, loosely twisted into cords and then plaited, in a short tinder-tube formed of a piece of hollow stick); attached to ears is a long cotton string, apparently intended to encircle the owner's waist; collected by General Lovett at Neemuch, in Rajpootana. India. [One of 14 examples (nos 939-952). All ASiatic. Most designed to be suspended from a belt or girdle. Steel is usually carried inside the pouch together with flint and tinder. Tinder is usually fungus-tinder, but often match-tinder in the form of cotton threads loosely twisted into cord an d inserted into a small bamboo tube or hollow stick].
