Philips N1500 video recorder and cassette, 1972.
Launched in 1971, this was the first practical domestic video recorder. It had a built-in TV tuner and timer so you could set it to record whilst you were out and it was fully automatic in operation. Unfortunately the video cassettes could only record a 60 minute programme, so it was impossible to record a full feature film (later versions of this system managed to get the recording time up to 120 minutes). The picure quality (full colour) was excellent, but the machine was far too expensive for most consumers.
