Black canvas-covered photograph album with the word “Photographs” embossed on the front cover. The spine is damaged and detached, and the album shows fraying along the edges. The pages exhibit signs of foxing, and the fabric covering on the back cover is worn and frayed. A collection of sepia-toned prints documenting colonial life in Kenya c.1896-1901 and the construction of the metre gauge Uganda Railway (aka “The Lunatic Express”) from Mombasa to Port Florence (later named Kisumu) on Lake Victoria. The photographs show Mombasa Harbour, panoramic views, boats, Macupa ferry, Mombasa railway station, European hospital and viaducts, amongst other scenes. Further, the images depict various stages of construction of the metre gauge railway, railway infrastructure, views of the surrounding landscape and various people, notably that of workers, locals and the Masai Warriors. Additionally, beneath each image is a handwritten annotation, made in black ink, identifying the subject of the photograph.
