A chromatrope is a kind of magic lantern slide. It is made of a wooden frame with two glass discs painted with abstract patterns, which rotate in opposite directions to produce kaleidoscopic images. They were also sometimes known as 'artificial fireworks' and were sidely used in the 19th century.
