Science Museum Group Collection

A brooch containing a collodion positive photographic portrait of a young man, taken by an unknown photographer in about 1860. 40x30mm oval picture set in gilt scrollwork mount; picture of young man's head and shoulders; pin back.

Brooch with portrait of a man, c. 1860.

The brooch contains a collodion positive photographic portrait of a young man, taken by an unknown photographer. The collodion positive or ambrotype process was in widespread use from 1852 to around 1890. Ambrotypes were considerably cheaper than photographs produced by earlier processes. Hence, they were important in the spread of photography and the development of a mass market for photographs.
