60x75mm painted silhouette of a man, with gold embellishment; set in brass mount on black lacquered hanging frame, 110x135mm papier-mache.

A silhouette portrait of a man, set in a brass mount and wooden hanging frame, created by an unknown artist in about 1810.

The man's hair and jacket have been highlighted with gold. His collar has been cut away and re-drawn, leaving a sharper outline of the face.

Silhouettes became popular in Britain in the late 1700s. They were named after Etienne de Silhouette (1709-1767), a French finance minister and amateur profile artist.
