Silhouette of woman
50 x 62mm painted silhouette with gold embellishment, set in brass mount in black lacquered papier-mache hanging frame 100x120mm. Convex cover glass.
A silhouette of a woman in a bonnet, set in a brass mount and wooden hanging frame, created by an unknown artist in about 1810.
The woman's bonnet has been added as a drawing. Her dress has been highlighted with gold to add texture.
Silhouettes became popular in Britain in the late 1700s. They were named after Etienne de Silhouette (1709-1767), a French finance minister and amateur profile artist.
