Silhouette of child
100 x 135mm cut-out silhouette, gold embellished, in wooden frame 160 x 195mm.
A full length silhouette of a little girl, created by an unknown artist, c. 1810.
The artist has selectively shaded the ground to give the portrait perspective and highlighted areas of the girl's hair and dress in gold.
Silhouettes became popular in Britain in the late 1700s. They were named after Etienne de Silhouette (1709-1767), a French finance minister and amateur profile artist.
