The 'Queen Elizabeth' was built by Cunard for New York service, however shortly after its launch in September 1938 it was requisitioned by the Ministry of War Transport, and refitted for transporting troops. After the war the ship was refurbished, making its first passenger voyage to New York in October 1946.
