A photograph of players fighting for the ball in Henmore Brook during the Shrovetide football match in Ashbourne, Derbyshire, in February 1950, taken by Bert Abell for the Daily Herald.
Shrovetide football in Ashbourne has taken place on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday annually for hundreds of years. As many as several thousand residents of Ashbourne compete, divided into two teams - the Up'ards (those who were born on the north side of Henmore Brook), against the Down'ards (born on the South side).
