A photograph entitled 'Three trilby hats', taken in September 1954 by Kenneth Lauder for the Daily Herald.

The photograph shows Samuel White, who had just arrived in England from Jamaica. White saved space in his luggage and preserved the shape of his hats by wearing all three of his trilbies for the journey.

Many families arrived in Britain from the Caribbean in the 1950s and 1960s, often due to the offer of jobs with companies such as London Transport or hospitals in the new Health Service. Most, however, came without work pre-arranged, hoping for a better life in Britain.
