A photograph of a woman pressing records on a Filmophone machine, taken in March 1932 by Leslie Cardew for the Daily Herald.

Early records were made of shellac, a brittle resin easily broken or scratched. In response, Filmophone developed a flexible transparent celluloid record which they produced in England during 1931-1932.
