Built by Hubert Scott-Paine (1890-1954), an engineer and director of Imperial Airways, the 'Miss Britain III' was due to be driven in a race against the 'Miss America X', driven by an American, Gar Wood (1880-1971). The race was an attempt to break the existing speed record. Wood won, despite having a far heavier craft.
