Science Museum Group Collection

A photograph of children receiving free bread in Disley, Cheshire, taken in December 1935 by White for the Daily Herald.

Each Christmas, every Disley villager was entitled to a free loaf of bread. The custom began when, many years previously, a bread fund was established from the income on rented land.
