A photograph of Jessie Matthews (1907-1981) standing within a flower arrangement she has just received, taken in December 1936 by Saidman for the Daily Herald.
A note on the handle of the flower basket reads, 'To our Jessie, From the entire Staff of the Gaumont British Picture Corp. Ltd. Its Grand to have you back'. Actress, singer and dancer, Jessie Matthews was a stage and screen star in the 1920s and 1930s.
Two Saidman brothers, Reuben and Barnet, worked as staff photographers for the Daily Herald. Their photographs are simply stamped 'Saidman' on the reverse, making it difficult to tell which of the brothers took the photograph.
