The winner of the 'Beautiful Toddlers' competition watches as the other competitors struggle over her prize - a large toy dog. The competition was part of Southend Carnival, held in Priory Park. The Southend Carnival began in 1906 as a parade and by the 1930s had grown to a full week of events.
Two Saidman brothers, Reuben and Barnet, worked as staff photographers for the Daily Herald. Their photographs are simply stamped 'Saidman' on the reverse, making it difficult to tell which of the brothers took the photograph.
