A photograph of workers in the Swan Hunter Shipyard on Tyneside, taken in January 1940 by Bishop Marshall for the Daily Herald.
The photograph shows Thomas Picken, a plater, directing a crane moving a large sheet of metal. His co-workers look on in the background. Many warships were built at Swan Hunter during World War Two, including destroyers, destroyer escorts, cruisers and battleships. This photograph is one of a series taken to illustrate a Dudley Barker feature story on workers in wartime.
