A photograph of workers in the Swan Hunter Shipyard on Tyneside, taken by Bishop Marshall for the Daily Herald newspaper on 8 January, 1940. Harry Hinson, an iron shipwright, stands with a co-worker amongst a framework of ship's girders. He is shouting directions up to colleagues in the scaffolding. This photograph is one of a series taken to illustrate a Dudley Barker feature story on workers in wartime.

Many warships were built at Swan Hunter during the second world war, including destroyers, destroyer escorts, cruisers and battleships. This photograph is one of a series taken to illustrate a Dudley Barker feature story on workers in wartime.
