A photograph of ice skaters on a frozen Serpentine Lake in London's Hyde Park, taken by Saidman for the Daily Herald newspaper on 23 January, 1940.

A photograph of ice skaters on a frozen Serpentine Lake in London's Hyde Park, taken in January 1940 by Saidman for the Daily Herald.

The skaters were taking part in a production entitled 'The Ballet of Youth'. January 1940 was the coldest month in Britain since 1895, the River Thames in London froze over for the first time since 1880.

Two Saidman brothers, Reuben and Barnet, worked as staff photographers for the Daily Herald. Their photographs are simply stamped 'Saidman' on the reverse, making it difficult to tell which of the brothers took the photograph.
