A photograph of a tinplate worker in a South Wales factory, taken by Harold Tomlin for the Daily Herald newspaper on 28 January, 1940. Dressed in well-worn work clothes Dai Ward loads a trolley with tinplate sheets. In the background some of his fellow workers smile for the camera. Wales was the centre of the British tinplate industry due to the quantity of iron works and easy accessibility to Cornish tin. This photograph is one of a series taken to illustrate a Daily Herald feature story by Dudley Barker on workers in wartime.
