A photograph of the driver of a steam locomotive leaning out of his cab, taken in January 1940 by Tomlin for the Daily Herald.

Driver Mr Bailey stands in the cab of a London Midland and Scottish express train. During the second world war, railway work was classed as a 'Reserved Occupation' - vital to the national economy and reserving workers for railway, rather than frontline duty. This photograph is one of a series taken to illustrate a Dudley Barker feature story on workers in wartime.
