A photograph of a woman wearing badges and holding a number of flags, taken by Nixon for the Daily Herald newspaper on 11 April, 1945.

A photograph of a woman wearing badges and holding a number of flags, taken in April 1945 by Nixon for the Daily Herald.

With the end of the war against Germany in sight, Britain prepared to celebrate VE (Victory in Europe) Day. This young woman is wearing a number of different badges and rosettes - of uncertain origin - to celebrate. Illegal trade in such goods was common, as profiteers and criminals took advantage of wartime shortages.
