Hammersmith Bridge

Made:
circa 1856 in United Kingdom
photographer:
Peter Le Neve Foster

A photograph of Hammersmith Bridge, London, taken by Peter le Neve Foster (1809-1879), in about 1856.

This bridge, designed in 1827 by the engineer William Tierney Clark (1783-1852), was the first suspension bridge across the River Thames. It quickly proved to be too narrow for the weight of traffic using it and was replaced in 1887 with a new bridge designed by Sir Joseph Bazalgette (1819-1891). Foster corresponded with W H F Talbot (1800-1877) on photography. He was secretary of the Society of Arts from 1853 until his death, and was also secretary to the Photographic Society of London.
