Foster was elected into the Society of Arts in 1837; served as treasurer 1850–1851, and in 1853 became secretary until his death in 1879; organized a series of touring exhibitions of photographs from the society's collection; one of the founders of the Photographic Society in 1853, and contributed to its Journal.
