Magic lantern slide: Man eating a rat
A magic lantern slide showing a man eating a rat, made by Charles Baker between 1850 and 1910. The slide shows a man asleep in his bed, unaware that there is a rat on his pillow.
The sleeping man swallowing rates was a very popular magic lantern slide, which was made in both rackwork and slipping slide versions. It featured a man asleep in bed, when his mouth opened, presumably as he was snoring, one or more rats would scurry in. Many versions of this slide were made by many manufacturers, but the original is credited to English slide painted C Constant.
