A slipping slide consists of two pieces of glass - both painted with different stages of a movement. Black patches painted on the movable, or 'slipping', slide alternately cover and uncover the stages of movement.

The first slide in this pair show the woman wearing a full skirt, when the slide is moved the skirt disappears to reveal her crinoline frame and petticoat.
