Hand-coloured pivoted magic lantern slide of cat with arched back, made by Newton & Company, circa 1870.

Pivoted lantern slides are designed to provide movement in the projected lantern image - particularly rocking or swinging motion. They are similar to slipping slides except that the moving glass parts swing about a fixed pivot point rather than sliding. The pivoted glass slides were moved by hand by wiggling the small handles at the side of the wooden frame.
