Vidicons are electrically and mechanically simpler and physically smaller than the earlier Image Orthicons.The Vidicon was developed in the 1950s at RCA as a simple alternative to the structurally and electrically complex Image Orthicon. Originally deemed unsuitable for UK broadcast cameras (especially the early integral-mesh versions with the Antimony Trisulphide targets) they did find limited use in slide-scanners and in TV news (from BBC Alexandra Palace). Later target materials led to the development (by Philips) of the Plumbicon tubes which were extensively used in colour TV cameras from the late 60s.
