EMI L2B Midget Audio Tape Recorder, 1957
- Made:
- 1957 in Westminster
EMI L2B Midget portable audio tape recorder, 1957. It has a hand-rewind to save battery power.
The L2B runs at 7.1/2 ips which was the most popular speed (L2A ran at 3.3/4 ips, and L2C ran at 15 ips). Tape spools ranged from 3" to 5" in size. The 1957 Hi Fi Year Book gives its price as £102.18s.0d.
The L2 series was essentially a BBC design produced by EMI. It was used for news reports and other outside broadcasts. The BBC later converted the electronics from valves to transistors, which gave the recorder a much longer battery life. Tape rewind was still with a crank handle. Some rare models had pilot tone for camera sync.
