Sign for BBC Radio 1 Studio EG4.

BBC Radio 1 was based at Egton House next to Broadcasting House from 1985, giving the studio prefix EG. Radio 1 left in 1996. The building was demolished and replaced by New Broadcasting House which was named the Egton Wing. Radio 1 moved back in 2012 and the wing was renamed the Peel Wing in honour of late DJ John Peel.

The studio sign features the Radio 1 logo at the time, including the FM title branding. Since its launch Radio 1 had shared FM frequency with Radio 2 for selected programmes as the BBC had been allocated three FM frequencies based on its previous radio station structure of Light Programme, Third Programme and Home Service, replaced by BBC Radio 2, 3 and 4. From 1988 the frequency 97-99 FM was allocated to Radio 1 and included in the station name until 1995.

During this period the flagship programme Radio 1 Breakfast was hosted by Simon Mayo (1988-93), Mark Goodier (1993) and Steve Wright (1994-95); and The Official Chart was hosted by Bruno Brookes (1986-90 and 1992-95) and Mark Goodier (1990-92).
