More

The SS 'Himalaya', was ordered by P&O and laid down in November 1851 as an iron steam passenger ship, said to be the biggest ship ever built at the time. Following her maiden passenger voyage in 1854, the Admiralty charted the ship for the Crimean War as a troopship. Shortly afterwards, the Admirality purchased the SS 'Himalaya' and renamed her the HMS 'Himalaya', converting her to carry up to 3000 soldiers.
