Fictional story 'The Goblin in the Gasworks', handwritten manuscript featuring painted illustrations, by James Lovelock, 1930s. Includes a photocopy of the last page of the manuscript, measuring 290 mm x 210 mm.
Scientist and inventor James Lovelock wrote this story for his school magazine whilst he was a boy. He was inspired after visiting Beckton Gasworks in London, which was one of the biggest in Europe at the time. Lovelock continued to write fictional stories throughout his life. In 'The Goblin in the Gasworks', as in many of his later stories, the main character saves the day through the application of science.
