Impressions Gallery photography collection and archive. Approximately 2000 photographs and contemporary photographs plus associated archive material relating to running of gallery (roughly 15,000 objects, including prints, posters, correspondence etc), covering period from 1972 to 2010.

Established in York in 1972, Impressions Gallery was one of the first specialist photography galleries in Europe. It played a vital role in championing photography as an art form. In its early years, Impressions exhibited and championed the carreers of significant photographers, includling Martin Parr. In the late 1980s and 1990s, Impressions adopted a more defined curatorial strategy, focussing on new work by national and international photographers that critically engaged with race, gender, identity and politics. In 2005 Impressions moved to Bradford to consolidate its increasingly important position within the UK and international photography scene.
