Transmitting valve type U75

Made:
1922 in England

Transmitting valve type U75, made by the Edison Swan Electrical Co. Ltd and used in the 2ZY radio station at Metropolitan-Vickers, Trafford Park, c.1922.

This valve is one of the only surviving objects from Manchester’s first radio station - 2ZY. This station was established by Metropolitan Vickers, a key engineering company in Manchester and member of the original BBC consortium. 2ZY had its first official broadcast on 15th November 1922 and regularly broadcast news, music and entertainment to listeners in the North-West region.

2ZY used valves such as this to strengthen the radio signal so it could travel further and reach more listeners.
