Water turbine and alternating current hydro-electric generator made by Brush Electrical Engineering Co. Ltd, Lougborough, 1894.
This hydro-electric system was installed at Waterside House near Hawkshead in the Lake District shortly after 1897 by owner and early electrical engineer Frederick Fowkes. Water was directed to the turbine by a large iron pipe from Wraymires Tarn, producing the first electric light system in the valley. This lighting system was used to light Waterside until after WWII.
This hydro-electric system uses the design of William Morris Mordey, chief electrician of the Brush Electrical Engineering Company from 1881 to 1897. Mordey designed both the alternator and the transformer that Brush manufactured and sold as a system during this period.
