Pelton hydropower water turbine, made by Gilkes & Gordon Ltd, Kendal, c.1955.

Pelton wheels were developed for hydroelectric power generation. Lester Allan Pelton (1829-1908) patented his invention in 1880. The Pelton wheel became essential in hydroelectric power generation, especially in regions with reliable high-head water sources. It played a crucial role in the development of early hydroelectric power plants, contributing to the electrification of rural and urban areas.
