Bell from Liverpool Road Station, Manchester, c. 1831.
When Liverpool Road station opened, people didn’t know how to use the railways because passenger services were a novelty. Staff rang this original station bell to tell passengers their train was ready to leave.
It was important to be on time. Missing a train usually meant waiting several hours until the next one. There were around ten trips a day.
