Programable calculators were popular with technical workers before personal computers become commonplace, as they allowed people to write and run simple mathematical programs, which were especially useful for engineers and scientists.
The Enterprise Programmable was produced by the Cambridge electronics firm Sinclair Radionics. Sinclair was a very successful producer of electronic pocket calculators in the early 1970s. Sinclair’s calculators were typically cheaply produced and not terribly reliable, but they were also innovative, excitingly advertised, and affordable, meaning they became very popular. However, by the late 1970s the company was in financial trouble and supported by the Government through the National Enterprise Board, hence the product name “Enterprise” on this type of calculator.
