Spiralarm miners safety lamp and methane detector, made by J. H. Naylor Ltd, c. 1960.
The Spiralarm lamp is based on Patent 352,267 taken out in 1931 by Colin McLuckie of Wigan for a system to detect the increased temperature when the flame of the lamp heats up in the presence of methane. The design was commercialised by J. H. Naylor Ltd from the end of World War Two.
