Miner's safety lamp, made by Richard Johnson, Clapham & Morris Ltd, c. 1890s.
The large size and twin wicks mean that this is Shaft Lamp. They gave much more light but large internal volume mean that they were unsafe in the presence of methane, restricting their use to areas close to the air intake shaft bottom. This design remained in use to the start of World War One.
